Greetings from Quebec

Bouleau Jaune (Yellow Birch) is the official provincial tree of Québec

Beautiful Fact - Although its leaves do turn yellow in the fall, the tree gets its name from the fact that the bark is a golden yellow for much of its life.

The papery, shredded bark is very flammable due to its oil content and can be peeled off and used as a fire starter even in wet conditions.

The Yellow Birch can be tapped in the same manner as the sugar maple, though the sap is not as sweet so it is seldom used to make syrup for pancakes and waffles. It is more commonly used as a flavouring agent or as an ingredient in sauces and glazes.

Leaves - The oval-shaped leaves are a deep yellowish-green, usually growing to a length of 8-11 cm.
